Flat track motorcycle racing is one, if not the only, form of motorsport that originated in the United States over 100 years ago. Kansas has a very rich history of flat track racing that is known nationwide in racing circles. In the 50s, 60s and 70s flat track racing was at its peak with races happening everywhere in the country from national events in San Jose, CA., Louisville, KY. and Daytona, FL. to local flat track-scramble races all over Kansas at places like Plainville, Dodge City, Wakeeney, Wichita and even Yocemento (west of Hays) had a scrambles track.
Every year in late summer Kansas became the focus of the two-wheeled racing world. For approximately a 10-day period, 100 to 200 racers from all corners of the country would come to Kansas to test their skills against the best in the business on the “Kansas Fair Circuit.” County fairs would host races in Belleville, Norton, Stockton, WaKeeney and Colby; nowhere in the country were there more races in such a short amount of time.
The popularity of the sport was on the decline in the later part of the century but has shown a resurgence in the last 10 years. The Great Plains Flat Track Series (GPFTS) was founded in 2008 but the crew of the GPFTS have been officiating races for 17 years at many tracks in the central states area.
A GPFTS race consists of heat races and feature races for all amateur and pro classes. The classes range from the pee wee class on 50cc motorcycles (the Pee Wees race around cones on the front straight away, always a crowd favorite) to some of the best riders in the nation on specialty built flat track 750cc bikes. There will also be Pro ATV class.
